Hypnotherapy OCD Birmingham West Midlands

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common anxiety based mental health condition in which a person has obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours.

I have worked with men, women and children of all ages who have OCD.

Symptoms of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)

If you have OCD, you’ll usually experience frequent obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours.

  • an obsession is an unwanted and unpleasant thought, image or urge that repeatedly enters your mind, causing feelings of anxiety, disgust or unease
  • a compulsion is a repetitive behaviour or mental act that you feel you need to carry out to try to temporarily relieve the unpleasant feelings brought on by the obsessive thought

There are many forms of OCD that I have treated including

  • Checking
  • Cleaning
  • Contamination / Mental Contamination
  • Symmetry and ordering
  • Ruminations / Intrusive Thoughts
  • Hoarding

Obsessions and compulsions

Many of us experience intrusive thoughts from time to time. When these thoughts become persistent and dominate your thinking, it can become an ‘obsession’.

Those with OCD tend to have upsetting obsessions such as:

  • fear of hurting themselves or others (deliberate or accidental)
  • fear of being ‘contaminated’ by germs/bacteria
  • a fear of becoming unwell or dying

The thoughts may be violent or even sexual in nature and can be very stressful for the person affected.

Even though the person with OCD will likely be aware that the behaviours are irrational, the urge to carry it out overwhelms them. And as it offers temporary relief from the anxiety they’re feeling, doing it ‘just in case’ or to rid themselves of said anxiety can become the norm.

As the condition worsens, it becomes all-consuming and some people struggle to carry out daily tasks or even leave the house.

Hypnotherapy is  a natural treatment that many consider to help with OCD.
